Recent projects

  • An almshouse for the 21st century

Working with United St Saviour’s charity to develop their Eveming Standard Grand-Prix-winning Appleby Blue project, developing their vision for community engagement, and an operating model for the ‘Appleby Kitchen’ community spaces. Also evaluating and proposing a new operating model for care of elderly residents across their housing. Further work on organisational development and scale-up.

  • A People-Powered Regeneration strategy

Working with the Made in Bermondsey partnership to develop a ‘people-powered regeneration’ strategy to sit alongside the landmark £2m development of the Blue Market. From in-depth sensitive research on culture and identity, to market research, and creation of an actionable strategy to preserve, change, and revive local community.

  • Grantmaking modernisation

Modern grantmakers need to be flexible, evidence-driven, and focused on impact, with robust processes. They also need to be truly understanding of the organisations they fund - and to bring a humility to their work, with an aliveness to the power imbalances inherent in philanthropy. Working confidentially with a place-based grantmaker, I’ve undertaken a programme of strategic review and development, and modernisation. Beginning with extensive needs assessment research and stakeholder consultation, I went on to deliver a review of impact, before undertaking a review of grant-making practice and governance. This led to substantial changes, including a merger of operations with another grantmaker to increase efficiency and reach. The trust has now relaunched as a modern 21st century grant-making charity, with a range of new programmes, and much better use of its spending, to drive greater impact.

  • Evaluation: NHS South West London/ Age UK Croydon VCS Partnerships

Working with Age UK Croydon, NHS South West London, and Healthwatch, to evaluate and set the future direction for the Personal Independence Coordinator Service, a community-based key service in Croydon’s thriving integrated care network. A wide-ranging piece of action research across all sections of the health and social care system.

  • Strategy Review: British Blind Sport

Working with national disability sports organisation to review their current position, and support the development of their new strategy for the next five years in light of their new five year core funding from Sport England. Included substantial stakeholder consultation and research as well as extensive staff consultation.

  • Research: VCS Online Activity Since Lockdown, Dunhill Medical Trust

This major research was funded by the Dunhill Medical Trust and National Lottery Community Fund and explores the use of online group activities to connect older people to community. In particular, it looks at the current state of ‘hybrid’ delivery across the UK – what are the opportunities and challenges? What have others found? This work involved extensive interviews with charities across the UK to understand their challenges, enablers, successes, and stumbles, in this growing area of charitable delivery. It also involved NHS Commissioners and key grantmakers. This work informed a major partnership/ investment with UKRI (UK Research and Innovation)/ Innovate UK.
